A Very Tired Sunday

After being up late on Saturday at a friend's graduation party and having to spend twice as long driving back to Madison on Sunday because of a ten inch snow storm I was a little tired while playing on Sunday. I don't think it had much of an effect on my early tourneys but I think some of the later ones I entered, the FTOPS main event, it did cause me to make a few mistakes that I probably normally don't.

I'm not saying I was playing horribly and making mistakes left and right. I still felt like I played really well. It's tough to judge how much something like playing tired affects your play since it would take playing a few thousand tournaments both tired and not tired to really be able to see a difference. I can however look at individual hands and lines I took to see if I would play it differently. Here is one hand from the FTOPS main event that bothered me:

Just a quick one again. Turned 26 on Wednesday and had a great day up until I got home and realized I had lost my keys somewhere while out at the bars. So had to deal with that hassle all Thursday but at least it kept my mind off that horrible holiday that follows my birthday.

I got a belated birthday present today though when I took 2nd in a Stars $50 freezeout that had almost 900 runners. First place was just over $11k and for second place I got $6.3k. I was also up a few buy-ins at cash games today so it was great day.

I'm going to be out of town on Saturday but I'm hoping to be back on Sunday in time to play the Stars $2 Million Tourney, the FTOPS main event, and the Stars Million. I'll put a blog up with more details on tonight's tourney and recap whatever happens on Sunday. I'm still trying to get the hand of this blogging thing.

Not gonna write much of a blog right now since I'm rather tired. Started out today by having a great cash session and then decided to jump in the two $50 - $50k guaranteed tourneys like I have so many nights before. I bust out of the Poker Stars tourney early, like usual, and then get deep in the Full Tilt tourney, like usual. Not sure if it's the different structures or if I've just been running better on Full Tilt but I always go deep in the Tilt and bust the Stars early. Except instead of getting deep on Tilt this time and then taking a bad beat or losing my first flip all of my hands held and I even won a few flips and finally took it down!!!

PCA Trip Report (Really Long)

I was a little worried that the PCA trip this year wouldn't measure up to last year but it did and I once again had a blast while I was down there.

PCA Tournament Recap
*disclaimer*: Probably boring. Skip down for a summary of the 'non-poker' part of the trip.

I had a pretty decent table draw for Day 1 and had good position on the more aggressive players at the table. We were supposed to have Norm McDonald, the comedian, at the table but he ended up being a no show. I had a good first level (75min levels) at my table and worked my starting stack up from 20k to 25k by the end of it. My only big hand in that level was with AJo. The lady to my right limped, which she had been doing a lot, I made it 400 to go at 50/100 blinds, David Coclough(sp?), a european pot-limit omaha pro, called on the button and both blinds folded. The flop came JTx with two diamonds, the lady checked, I bet out 800, David made it 2200 to go and the lady folded. [[ This is a content summary only.
Just a quick update:

Started with 20k in chips for the tourney and I've survived day 1 but am really short with 10k. The average right now is probably 55k or so. Didn't get many hands and didn't have many spots to make moves at the tables I was at. The blinds will be at 500/1000 with a 100 ante for 30 minutes (levels are 75min) for Day two on Monday and will then go to 600/1200 with a 150 ante so if I can double once I'll have a pretty workable stack again.

Big Happy New Years to everybody!!!!!!

I'm glad to be out of 2007 as it was not as good to me as 2006 was. I felt like my game improved from what it was in 2006 but unlike 2006 every shot I took at bigger tourneys ended in disaster. Especially live where I got my first chance at some of the big buy-in tournaments. It all started when I busted the PCA about 30 minutes into the second level when AA < KK all-in preflop. So, remembering that I will base all of my 2008 on what happens at the PCA. If I take a sick beat like that again I'm just walking away from the game. (OK, that's a complete lie.)

I only have one "New Year's Resolution" for 2008 and that is to try and keep my blog updated a little more. I've been pretty lazy on the blogging side of things the past few weeks and will try and keep it updated more in '08. [[ This is a content summary only.
I don't want to make it official yet but I think the downswing and the running bad is finally coming to an end. I'm not running good yet but I'm definitely not running bad anymore. Last night I finished in 13th in the Full Tilt Fifty Fifty and tonight I finished in 12th. So definitely getting closer.

Cash games were even starting to turn on me toward the end of this week as I was losing pretty much every all in pot I played. I lost to a one outer yesterday when I turned the king high flush and he rivered a gutshot straight flush to beat me. I was starting to think that I couldn't win anymore but then I finally got lucky when I beat AQ with 86 of hearts on a QQ97 two heart board. We got it all in on the turn and I hit the 5 on the river for the straight.

I heard a quote watching TV yesterday that inspired me, "Good is the enemy of great." Which got me motivated to really get back to studying and working to improve my poker game. [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

I stayed away from tournaments for the most part this week and stuck mostly to the cash games. I didn't put as many hours in actually playing this week either. I spent more time reading the forums and thinking about game strategy and theory as well as disguising some hands with other players to try and figure out any leaks I have right now.

I really don't think there is too much wrong with my game right now. When I get frustrated and go on tilt is only time I don't think I'm playing profitably. With this tournament downswing and the slow to break even progress in cash games it's been pretty tough lately to stay off of tilt. Many times I'll start out playing my 'A' game just to take some bad beats or coolers early. Sometimes I'm able to laugh it off but other times I can tell it affects my game.
Sorry it's been forever since I've had a blog up. I usually try and wait for some good news like a decent tourney score or a sick day in cash games when I'm lookoing to start up again but it just hasn't happened for me lately. I'll try to get back into the habit of putting up a blog bi-daily or close to it again.

Gun hunting was a great time as usual. I ended up shooting two does and tagging another buddy's buck so I have plenty of venison to get me through another year. I was up north for the entire week except Wednesday and Thursday when I was home for Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving was great but I did get some bad news while at home. My family dog, Lucky, was put to sleep on the Friday after Thanksgiving so while I was home I made sure to spend some time with her. She was 13 years old when she passed which was well above the average life span for her breed. [[ This is a content summary only. I hunt with a great group of guys so it's rarely ever a bad time when we're up there even if we don't see any deer. Next week is gun hunting so hopefully I'll have a little more success then.

My internet doesn't work when I'm up north either so there won't be any updates unless they are some voice updates.
Because the FTOPs was a 6max event tonight I figured I'd spend one more day playing tournaments and look to hit a nice score. Once again it was a big mistake. I've been crushing my cash games lately and I don't know why I keep going back to the tournament scene.

Played most of the big nightly tournaments on both Stars and Tilt. Busted the FTOPs with set under set, the $320 on Stars with KK < AA, and the only tournament I got deep in, a $109 on Stars, I lost AA < 33. I'll give tournaments one more try next week Wednesday when they have the NL 6max $320 with rebuys FTOPs event.

I'm leaving tomorrow afternoon to head up north bow hunting and probably won't be back until Wednesday. Then next weekend is gun hunting so I won't be playing much from the 16th - 24th. I may get some cash game play in but it will depend on whether or not I can get service on my at&t wireless card while I'm up north. [[ This is a content summary only.
Toward the end of October after I had a few really nice runs in tournaments I was considering playing them full time again and leaving cash behind for a month. However after another really disappointing Sunday I'm already fed up with tournaments again. I know... I lasted real long into November.

I blame it all on my roommate who continues to crush tournaments and that keeps me coming back to them. He finished 2nd in the Bodog 100k last Sunday for a nice score and then FTed the Full Tilt 750k yesterday for another sick cash. He definitely deserves it though as he studies the game and puts a lot of thought into it both at and away from the tables. Every time I decided to get away from tourneys I see him hit a big score and then I get the itch to play them again. I get deep in something, whiff at the end, and then get fed up with tournaments again. It's becoming a vicious cycle.

So for the rest of November I'm going to play mostly cash again. [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

Been two weeks since I've put a blog up. My computer took a crash on me... again. Just before last weekend my internet browsers stopped working and so did my AIM. When I started to mess around with it and try to fix it I just ended up making things worse. So about the middle of last week I just wiped the whole computer and reinstalled windows and now everything seems to be back in good working order.

Last weekend was also my little sister's wedding so I wasn't doing much playing as I had commitments for that from Thursday - Sunday. It was a great time though and she married a really good guy. They grows up so fast now... *tear*.

So I missed the big majors last Sunday due to the wedding but got back in time to jump in the Stars 2nd Chance tourney. I ended up going deep in that and then busting when I got it all in preflop with AA against QTs for a top 2 stack with 50 left only to lose to his rivered two pair. [[ This is a content summary only.
This is the first day where I've actually started to feel good. Still have a pretty wicked headache but it's much better than where I was at before.

This Sunday started out great as the Packers pulled out a close win and the Bears lost a heartbreaker... awwwww. :) But then I started to play poker and it started to go down hill. I started out by losing $500 in cash games as I lost all 3 of my the flips I was in (and I had the 55% end too). I could tell I was frustrated though and that I wasn't playing my best anymore so I called it quits for the day and went back to football.

I then sweated my roommate to a win in the early $109r on Stars and was motivated to play a few tournaments as he's been having some great success lately. (He also won a seat in the $650 satellite to the PCA on Saturday.) So being all motivated to play doesn't help much when it's too late to get in most of the decent tournaments.
A Different Kind of Sick Day

http://tworags.com/index.php?ACTION=blogs&todo=view&ID=1043

Still feeling sick which sucks but it's not enough to keep me in bed just enough were I feel like crap all day. Not sure if it's been good for me to play since I have that slow groggy feeling where it seems like your brain is thinking in slow motion. Hopefully this will disappear soon.

Yesterday was another ridiculous day and about 2/3s of the way through it I thought it was gonna be the mirror opposite of Tuesday. I started out 8 tabling again and was doing pretty decent to start. Then things went bad and one player in particular put me on tilt. He was stacking off with any draw, any pair, and playing 75% of his hands. But somehow he kept hitting monsters on me and stacking me and then dumping my chips to the rest of the players. So about 2.5 hours into my session I was down $1200. I knew I wasn't playing my best before but I took a deep breath and decided to try and get back to my usual game and just grind back. So after 4 hours of total play I was back up $50 on the day. After a day like Tuesday where you just kill the tables this may be the second best feeling you can have, digging yourself out of a hole to get to even.

I played another 3 tabling session while playing the 33r PCA satellite again later in the night. Went about the same as yesterday. I cashed the PCA satellite but didn't win so I basically got my money back (a little less this time since I had to double rebuy during the rebuy period). Also was up another $150 at the cash games for a total of +$200 on the day. My high point was +$600 but I played a few hands poorly toward the end of my session.

Stars is also starting to run some 'step' sngs to the PCA that I will probably play a few of. For those who weren't around in the Party Poker days here's a link to what a step sng is. PCA Steps

Not sure what the plan is for today. I really need to go get some grocery shopping done but I don't feel like leaving the house. Also, the cable still isn't working so I need to call the cable company again and get on their ass. So unless something crazy happens tonight I probably won't have another blog up for a few days.

Here are the hands against the maniac yesterday:

This is the hand that started me on tilt. It looks really bad without reads but he's stacking off with probably any 8, and straight draw and probably any 6 or flush draw combo on the turn.
http://www.pokerhand.org/?1577728

Hand number 2:
http://www.pokerhand.org/?1577731

Third overpair in a row against this guy and I have to hit a two outer to beat him:
http://www.pokerhand.org/?1577737

I'm not sure what the odds of those three hands happening is but while they weren't one immediately after the other I didn't get any other big pairs in between them. So for him to flop trips twice and hit his set (boat) the other time has to be ridiculous.

Now it's time to "FINISH HIM" though:
http://www.pokerhand.org/?1577748

Oh no wait, he picks up another monster against me... ok try again:
http://www.pokerhand.org/?1577757

Like I said he was doing that the whole time even with a full stack. So I got a little redemption at the end which helped me to get off tilt and make the little comeback on the day.

Came down with a cold the last day before leaving Aruba so I've had a headache and been congested the past few days. Despite not feeling the best I had an awesome day playing $1/2nl 6max cash games yesterday. Started off with a 1.5 hour 8 tabling session which can be rather draining as playing that many tables requires a lot of focus. I finished up about $600 and then took a little break to eat and put a new load of laundry in from my Aruba trip.

I was gonna catch up on my DVR after that but realized that my cable box was broken so I figured I might as well just put another little session in. Wasn't in the mood to 8 table again so I dropped down to 6 tables and surfed around the internet while playing. Playing 6 tables still requires a decent amount of my attention but I usually never feel rushed playing 6 tables like I occasionally do at 8. I played for about another 1.5 hours and brought my daily total up to about $1500. [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

I won't get into too many of the boring details of the trip. Most of my time was spent at the beach drinking, swimming, getting a tan and the rest was spent partying on the island or gambling in the Radisson Casino.

I barely played any poker while down there (which was my plan from the start) and I was really happy I took that route as it was a great break. The little poker I did play was at the $1/2nl tables usually late at night after I'd had a few too many drinks. It was fun donking around in the lower stakes and not caring too much about winning or losing any pots. I did play a bunch of blackjack and craps while down there and finished up a little bit overall on the trip as far as gambling was concerned.

The first two nights were a blast and I spent the first one meeting a bunch of the Madison poker players who I didn't already know. [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

WCOOP #17 - $320 6max

Wednesday was frustrating again and I'm completely fed up with tournaments for the time being. I'm not going to play the WCOOP ME and probably won't even try to qualify for the $5k in Aruba while I'm down there. Just gonna stick to cash games which have been going really well.

The WCOOP 6max got off to a pretty good start and about 3 hours in I had a nice stack and was playing really well but then went card dead and couldn't find any spots to pick up chips at my table. I also played the 2nd chance WCOOP 6max tournament and had a top 10 stack with about 150 left and ended up busting before 100 left. I lost one really big pot as a huge favorite and then went on to lose 3-4 flips in a row with the other player calling all-in each time. The other players weren't making bad calls but it's frustrating when I give myself two ways to win the pot by getting them to fold or winning the flip and I can't do either 4 times in a row.
Haven't played much since the 5CD tourney. Played in the $530 WCOOP last Sunday and then in the $1050 WCOOP this Sunday.

I went home for the weekend starting on Thursday night so I didn't get a chance to play the $215r or the $320 HU tourney. I got back to my apartment on Sunday around 1pm (cst) flipped on the Packer game and jumped on Stars quick to see if I could get into the last few sats for the $1k starting at 3:30. I was able to get into two of the $33r and the last chance $375. I love playing the satellites on Sundays since they usually get a big field and most people don't know correct strategy in them. The first $33r I went out in 32nd when top 30 got seats after losing with JJ < AT and then K6 < J7. The K6 hand I was all-in in the BB and it was very little for the SB to call but if I had won that hand I was guaranteed a seat as there were a lot of other shorties that were gonna get eaten by the blinds.
I was going to write a longer blog today but one of the guys who took 10th in the 5 Card Draw (5CD) tournament that I finished 5th in writes over at flopturnriver and did a quick interview about the tournament with me last night so I'll just link to that so I don't have to repeat most of the stuff. Interview.

My interview is under the WCOOP Event #2 summary and if you scroll down below my interview there is an interview of the guy who interviewed me (if that's not too confusing to follow). This was my first time being interviewed by anyone in about my play or tournament experience so feel free to let me know how you think I came off.

As I said in the interview this was my first time playing 5CD and it was a really good experience to see how well I could do at a game I'd never played by just relying on my tournament poker skills.
Just wanted to put up a quick hello to everyone here at TwoRags.com and to let everyone know I will be starting to blog here now as opposed to my old blog at www.badgerpro.blogspot.com. Feel free to check the old one out as I'm too lazy to transfer it over to here. I'll have a true first blog up within the next day covering my last big tourney score, the WCOOP 5 Card Draw.
