Deja Vu at the Beau Rivage

It was my girlfriend and my third anniversary so we spent last weekend at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi, MS. We flew into New Orleans and drove a rental car (~1.5 hour drive) to Biloxi. Checking in was a bit of a mess. At the front desk the clerk said they don't have any ocean view rooms (even though we booked one) and verified we want a non-smoking room. We make the trek up to the room and walk into what is clearly a smoking room. We go back down to the front desk and the manager gets us into a non-smoking room, and guess what now there is an ocean view available. So they set us up again and we go up to a really nice non-smoking ocean view room on the 15th floor. As I am going through the check-in documents I notice they have someone else's name on it. Back to the front desk for them to straighten it out, which only takes a few minutes. [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

So I'm driving down I-45 today from Dallas to Houston and decide to stop at McD's in Madisonville to try one of their new "Southern Style" chicken sandwiches. I snack on fries for a while and take a bite of the sandwich about 10 miles down the road. I didn't notice something was very wrong until the second bite, which I spit out. One full bite was swallowed. Salmonella and e-coli ftw.

I sent an e-mail to McD's with teh pics. I bet I get a free southern style chicken sandwich out of it.

I spent a day at Winstar casino this week and although it wasn't a terribly profitable trip I was really impressed by the poker room. First of all the poker room is absolutely huge and has a nice players' lounge for players to chill out while taking breaks or whatever, along with a grill and self service refreshment center. I have played live poker at a lot of places around the country but I must say the dealers at Winstar were among the best I have seen. They were extremely quick and accurate and seemed to do everything automatically. Combined with auto shufflers at the cash tables, the pace is pretty good.

I played $1/$2 NL for a few hours and hit a nice $600 pot when our table hit the "splash pot," where a randomly selected table gets $100 dropped into a hand. When the average stack is around $200, this obviously creates crazy play. Anyway I am UTG+1 and peel up A4o and jam my $180 stack in and get 3 callers. Only 2 of the callers showed, one with 44 and one with 45(??? [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

I played 2 donkaments in New Orleans, both Friday. I played Circuit Event # 1, a $500 event, and a $300 "second chance tourney." Neither tournament was very eventful and I never really was in a spot I liked. In both tournaments I ended up short stacks and shoving wide which eventually resulted in being knocked out by a better hand.

The real story comes from playing cash game on Saturday night. I was playing 2/5 NL with a whole crew of locals and a few good players. After about 2 hours of play I was down to about $250. I called a $20 raise with 77 from the BB along with 4 other callers. Flop comes K67 with 2 hearts. I check, someone bets $100, 3 call, and I shove my remaining $230 in. I get 2 callers who both cover me by about $200. So the main pot is about $900. The turn is the 6[h] giving me a full house and completing a flush. The other 2 players shove/call the turn. One tables A6 and the other KJ. River - K. [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

Taking Early Small Edges in Tournament Poker

I got a PM on 2+2 that posed an interesting question so I thought it might me good to post the question and my response on here.

Question:

You seem to be the most knowledgable poster here [sidebar: LOL], so I was hoping you could settle something for me.

You've helped me reconsider my approach to MTTs (from survivor to accumulator). However, for whatever reason, I'm not yet fully convinced that taking a +chipEV edge early is always correct (I know this is an on-going, classic debate...but it seems there is now a consensus that the accumulators are correct). Here's why:

I think a valid assumption at the early stages of an MTT is that we are going to be dealt many hands. We can calculate the probability of getting AA...which will be relativley high (we can add in KK and QQ, etc...so, even higher). When we take the early +chipEV....we are foregoing this high probability of being dealt AA.

Again, I know this has been hammered (and have read Woodguy's thread)... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

In addition to a 33rd place finish in the Pokerstars Sunday Hundred Grand and some other deep cashes, grinding $12/180 turbos on stars has been going really well. These tourneys are known to be high variance and can be really frustrating when not running good. However, they are easily beatable long term and I have had good overall results. I'm up over $2k overall for April so I hope to continue this run going into WSOP-C in New Orleans.

Choctaw Durant OK Trip Report

I was staying with my parents in DFW so we decided to head up to the Choctaw casino in Durant. My parents play the slots but I would have at least a couple hours to try out the poker room.

The casino is very smoky inside, but the poker room is smoke-free. They have burgers that seem to be free that you can fix yourself laying on a table in the room, buffet-style. The poker room manager has a modern computer setup outside the poker room where you put your name on the interest list. I signed up for 1/2 NL and after about 15 minutes they started a new table for me and the others that had signed up. The poker room is pretty middle of the road but probably more upscale than a typical tribe casino. Not as nice as Vegas rooms or Harrah's in New Orleans, but solid. The tables have auto shufflers and the dealers seem competent, although a bit "country." There isn't much for a hundred miles on either side of Durant, so this should be expected.
Most of you work a 9 to 5 job like me and play poker for recreation and extra income. Poker only made up about 10% of my income in 2007 and although I am off to a slow start I hope to best that in 2008. The problem is that poker is an extremely consuming hobby compared to other activities. People who enjoy, say, mountain biking or wine tasting, don't read strategy forums constantly, think about the equity of AKo with an M of 7 during their business meetings, or stay up late at night staring at a computer screen analyzing all the minutia of activity 6 or more tables can provide at any given moment. Most recreational activities also allow a fair degree of socializing during them, while online poker does not. Most nights my girlfriend lays on the daybed watching TV or browsing the net on the laptop while I play 4 to 6 tables. [[ This is a content summary only.
I used to play at Full Tilt a while back, where I grinded out $200 or so playing STT, cashed out profits, and then ran (played) horribly and went bust. Someone at 2+2 recently needed a tilt to stars transfer, so I decided to help them out and transfer $200 from stars to tilt and try out the site again. When Tilt announced the $100.00 bonus from their network problems it gave me extra incentive to play there.

I played a little over 100 STT with only breaking even and was starting to get frustrated. Then Sunday night I finished 5th out of 600 in a $10 KO tourney for a payount of $270. I also went on a STT heater, cashing in 11 out of 12 straight with several wins and along with bonuses and the 5th place KO finish grinded my $200 up to $700.

It's funny how poker can make you feel. When you are winning you feel like you are a great player and when losing you feel like you have completely lost touch with the game. Even though February has been pretty good to me (up over $1k) I continue to doubt my abilities. One of the biggest factors is that I have yet to have a big online MTT score. Making $2k grinding 2,000 STT is not near as rewarding to the ego as taking down a large MTT donkament and winning the same $2k in a single day.

I have been playing poker nights and weekends for around 2 years now, the last year pretty seriously. I have live profits of around $10,000 (most of this from the WSOP Circuit donkament I finished 3rd in) and relatively meager online profits of around $2,000. [[ This is a content summary only.
Pokerstars was on the fritz again last night so I loaded up $100 on AP to play some small stakes donkaments. First one I play is the nightly $5r which had 109 players in. I take it down for around $430. Nice little shot to the bankroll. The final table had pretty mediocre players, I knew as long as I didn't get unlucky I had a good shot at taking it down. Ran well obv, my big hands held up and I won 2 key coinflips.

I will try to get the HH on PXF for an official thread review on 2+2.

I love MTT, but with time demands and bankroll taking a hit is there any better way to build a roll than mult-tabling low-stakes STT? I was playing the $4/180's but as you can see I was getting nowhere. I started 4-tabling $6.50 turbo STT and have been getting good results.

I think I will continue grinding and only play a few weekend MTT until the WSOP Circuit in New Orleans (May).

Just finished 2nd in a stars $4/180. I've played a lot of these and this is my best finish. Unfortunately I am not happy with my heads up play at all. First hand of heads up my QQ > 55 and I held a 5 to 1 chip lead. I made some loose calls IMO trying to end it and ended up losing with KQ < A3. I'll be posting some of my hands on 2+2 for analysis but my own analysis is that my heads up play was pretty crappy. I've been running terribly since loading on pokerstars but this puts me almost even. Hopefully I can learn from this and plug some leaks for later.

I played a few major tournaments on Sunday, the Sunday 100k on stars and Sunday 100k on Cake. Was way up early in stars 100k but went card dead for a while. With around 5k left (3k pay) I push with 1010 and get called by A10. Ace on the river obv.

I played well in the Cake 100k and with about 300 left I raised JJ from the cutoff when the big blind was sitting out. Small blind pushes and I decide I beat his range because he thinks I am just trying to steal from the sitting out big blind. I am right and he tables 66. 6 on the flop obv and I am out.

I won two satellites to the Cake 100k so I guess I have an entry to the next one, whenever that is. Unlike pokerstars, you can not use your satellite win for entry into any tournament you want. Other than that I am pretty much busto on cake. Back to grinding $10 donkaments for satellite moneys.

Right now I am looking forward to going to New Orleans to play in the WSOP Circuit Event in May. [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

I've been playing on Cake, where I have been winning and placing in almost any satellite I play. Unfortunately, I did not do so well in the Sunday main events themselves. I had TWO bubble finishes and one early blowup. In both bubble finishes I got short stacked and just couldn't pull out. Hopefully will run better next week.

Just got back from 2 days in Vegas and boy did I run terrible. I didn't feel i played my best game at times but I also had some bad beats. I lost 100% (no lie) of my coin flips and lost 2 key hands that crushed me, one when K[s]10[s] > my KQ AIPF and K[d]9[d] > my KK AIPF. Apparently a sooted King is the new aces.

Played 5 of Caesar's $150 tourneys (which are great) and 2 of the Flamingo $65. I'll be back for New Years and will hopefully play and run better.

New Orleans WSOP Circuit Event Cash

http://tworags.com/index.php?ACTION=blogs&todo=view&ID=1443

This is my first chance to discuss my 3rd place finish at the WSOP Circuit Event in New Orleans, LA.

I took Monday off work to fly to NOLA and play in the tournament. I registered when the desk opened, played a little video roulette and stopped by my work's office in NOLA which is a few blocks from Harrah's.

You start with 1500 chips and blinds of 25/25. I was a little nervous being my first large live tourney but I settled in quick. Within an hour I busted a short stack when KK > JJ and I built up to 3000 chips. Over the next hour I got back down to 2000 or so.

First hand in the second hour everyone folds to me in the SB with K[h] Q[s]. I raise to 300 and BB calls. Flop comes J[d] 9[d] 5[h] . I bet 500 on the flop and he calls with no hesitation. The turn comes the 10[d] giving me the straight (and possibly filling out a flush draw). I have only 1200 behind so I push all in and BB calls showing A[d] A[s]. Nice.
