Weird Session -- nothing went as expected
By billchoice1 on 11/14/2006 read billchoice1's complete blog
Just a quick entry before I head into class. Had a very weird session last night. I got my money in as favorite 4 times:

1) AA vs. AK vs. QQ preflop. Lost to both when the flop came down TJQ.
2) A2 vs. KQh on a Ah2h5c board. Heart came on river.
3) JJ vs. 99 all-in preflop. Guy hit a straight!
4) Board of TJ5, I have 55, I raise, he reraises I push he calls. He turns over 89s and turns a 7! Why the hell is he calling me?

On the other hand I won twice as a dog. I check raised on the flop when I had a nut flush draw and two overs. Guy calls with two pair, and I rivered the flush.

I also had TT vs. AA. Just called the preflop raise and I flopped a set. Guy raises on flop, I call. He raises on turn and I push and he calls. I guess I was the favorite when the money got in on that one.

Chargers Rock -- Can you believe that game?
By joelgittel on 11/13/2006 read joelgittel's complete blog
My Chargers got themselves into quite a hole. They were down 28-7 at halftime. Did any of you see the game? They actually won 49-41. Can you f**&^'in believe that? When was the last time you saw a team give up 41 points and win. It was just crazy. And my man Philip Rivers really showed me something. He never gave up. It's heard to believe that this is his first year as a starter. He looks incredibly poised back there. On the last drive he scrambled out of the pocket and threw a shovel pass for a touchdown. Wow!!!!!!!!

LT continues to dominate and run for touchdowns. He added 4 more on Sunday. I think that makes 15 in the last 5 games. Amazing. Their defense looked pretty weak, but Cincinnati does have incredible firepower. If you would have told them that they would score 41 points and lose, they would have thought you were crazy. Hell, I would have thought you were crazy.

Go Chargers!!!!

 Poker on TV
By lakong on 11/13/2006 read lakong's complete blog
Today is Monday, and I really miss my weekly fix of High Stakes Poker. Not only is this my favorite televised poker show, it's probably my favorite TV show. Period. The show is just so entertaining and fun to watch. Much more so than the typical poker show. The tournament shows are just not that entertaining to me any more. They always turn into all-in fests because of the fast structures and the TV editing. Most of these shows do too many interviews and other features -- I guess to appeal to the non-poker players.

Contrast this to High Stakes Poker where we get to see how poker is really played. We see both pre and post flop play. Most of the players are really good and we can learn what these professionals do and don't do. I guess it's also fun to see how some of them players goof up and don't necessarily play as well as we believe they should.

 Home Game Tournament(s)
By EdmondDantes on 11/11/2025 read EdmondDantes' complete blog
Played in a couple tournaments last night in my regular home game. In the first, a $10 buy-in six-handed, winner-take-all, single table donk-n-go, I felted in 6th place when my trip As nine kicker got derailed by trip As jack kicker confirming yet again that Ax hands below AQ are like high school cheerleaders, fun to look at but likely to end up flaking on you. As a general rule, I stay away from the likes of AT and A9 but rationalized playing them here because we were short-handed (6 players) and the blind structure was steep. So much for that.

The second was a $40 buy-in (one allowed rebuy) single table tournament with nine players. I managed to take third in that one on the back of a couple of interesting hands. First, late in the tournament I savaged the same player who bounced me from the first tournament when my KK filled up on the turn. Interestingly, he didn't reraise my pre-flop raise with his jacks.

Not happy with the state of online poker
By jackbobby on 11/09/2025 read jackbobby's complete blog
Don't want to rant here but this online poker BS is really getting me down. Sure there are plenty of places to play, but it just isn't the same anymore. I love playing at Party but can't anymore. Full Tilt is all right but I'm just not comfortable there. I have played pokerstars sometimes, but I never seem to win there.

It just feels different too. Almost like I'm doing something illegal. Do you get that feeling now? Even my girlfriend keeps on asking me how it feels to be breaking the law. I tell her that I'm not doing anything wrong, but it's hard to explain. Maybe with the Democrats winning back the house and senate things will take a turn for the better. I sure hope so.

 Party $100+9 Multi Win
Trip report from PartyPoker
By lakong on 11/09/2025 read lakong's complete blog
This report was actually from January of this year, but I wasn't using this blog site then so only posted the report on 2+2. Since I haven't won too many larger tournaments I thought I would re-post here. Enjoy!

As many of you know I’ve been taking a break from poker after my WSOP overload. I’ve played an occasional tournament over the past few months, but no online multi’s at all. Had some time on Friday night and decided to give the PP $100+9 a shot. Stayed around average for a few hours, but with about 50 to go (was in the money already) had two big hands. In hand number one I made a positional raise from the button with broadway cards and missed the flop and when checked to me made a continuation bet. Opponent calls. On the turn it’s checked to me again and I bet (there was a straight and flush draw out there) and he calls again.

Back to work at the Hustler
Trip report from Hustler Casino
By lakong on 11/09/2025 read lakong's complete blog
So I was speaking to Edmond yesterday and he mentioned that he was heading out to the Hustler for their Wed. tournament. If you read my blog from yesterday you'll see where I say that I haven't played in a few months and that I was planning to jump back in next Monday. Well, I decided to join Ed and play last night.

Boy was it boring

I played in the tournament for about 1.5 hours and the live game for about 1.5 hours. I saw AQ once, JJ once, 55 twice, KJ twice and AT once. Those were my good hands. Not much to speak of. I also had a few playable hands like 89s, QTs, etc., but never hit a flop.

Tournament

It was a $150 buyin with $25 fee. There were a bit over 100 entrants and we started with 2,000 chips. I basically had 3 hands to speak of in addition to a bunch of the standard little stuff.

Hand 1

Blinds 25/25. MP raises to 75. I call from LP with KJ, another player calls. Flop is all low rags. Everyone checks.

 Hustler Wednesday Night Tournament
By EdmondDantes on 11/09/2025 read EdmondDantes' complete blog
I played the Hustler Wednesday night tournament tonight. For those of you who haven't played it, it's a $150 buy-in with a $25 fee, no rebuy freezeout that draws around 110 entrants and pays 9-10 spots. The tournament has a decent structure; you start with 2000 chips and the level times are 25 minutes. You have to get active early, though, because the jump around level 5 (from 100/200/25 ante to 200/400/50 ante) is brutal. Fortunately, tonight I had the good fortune of getting cards. Not that it mattered.

I got there a little late (the tournament starts at 7p and they seat until 7:30 or so) and sat midway through level 1. On my 3rd or 4th hand in, I was UTG with AA with the blinds now at 25/50. I raised to 200 hoping I'd get some loose action behind me and was pleased when MP player pushed for another 1500 or so and a 3rd player re-raised all-in behind him. I called instantly and tripled up when my AA held v QQ and JJ. Nice start.
