Chop? Are u serious?

Hollywood Park Casino
lakeoffire I'll have a couple of trip reports coming soon on my trip to Tahoe and Reno, but first I need to vent about a situation that came up yesterday. I went to Hollywood Park to try for my third win in a row. There were 95 entrants, and things weren't looking good by the 4th level. Finally, I flopped 2 pr on the BB for a big pot, and then had pocket AA hold up. Once I got some chips, I started to move in position. I told myself i would start stealing right before the bubble...and I did. I had a pretty big stack when we were down to about 17 players when people started to play back at me (bastards!). I lost about 8k, but managed to make the final table with about 16 big blinds--plenty for me to work with.

As soon as we're seated, I hear someone say "u wanna chop?" (9 handed). What? Are you kidding me? I object, but everyone else AGREES. I finally gave in, but I thought this was ridiculous. I have never chopped 9-handed and don't intend to again. Should I have just stood my ground and let them be pissed? In my mind I assumed they would all be gunning for me if I said no, but I guess I could have used it to my advantage. Any comments appreciated.

Wow, that's pretty gross. Have they no dignity? I think next time, you need to stand your ground. If they're gunning for you, so be it. More likely, you've got a table of 8 nits that are just trying to work their way up through the money by others busting out. Seems like that would be a pretty profitable spot for someone being aggressive. Props if you're really over the top about rejecting the chop, too. Something like "Are you kidding me? What a bunch of skirts! I know, why don't just call our wives or girlfriends and ask them what they think? God, you guys make me sick. Dealer, can you pass me that extra chip tray? I think I'm going to vomit." Should really make you super popular at the table. Especially with the ladies.

No way I would chop. Unless I was the chip leader and they gave me the title and a good portion of the winnings. Otherwise, no way in hell!

you're right to disagree. i'm usually pretty laid back about chopping, never to bring it up, but if majority rules, i usually give in. HOWEVER - with a full table, that would be silly. Esspecially under 100 entrants. What was the payout for the chop? What would first and ninth place have paid if it played through?

If top prize is 1k - then a nine way chop could only be what, a couple hundred? That's absurd.

Your right. We chopped by chip count and I ended up taking 3rd for about $800( i still think I could have taken 1st for close to 2k). The funny thing is the chipleader took about a $400 hit to satisfy the rest of the table. I don't mind chopping 3 or 4 handed ,but 9? Thanks for the input guys.
